When Trenchless Works and When It Does Not

Trenchless methods exist to protect what is above the pipe — mature trees, driveways, patios, established landscaping — and in the older St. Louis suburbs that is often worth more than the difference in method cost. Lining suits a pipe with sound geometry and bad joints. Pipe bursting suits a failed line that still runs a consistent path: a bursting head fractures the old pipe outward while pulling new HDPE through behind it, needing only pits at each end. Neither works on every line. Severe offsets, a collapse that has lost the path entirely, or a belly that needs re-grading all call for excavation, because trenchless follows the existing route and a route with a low spot in it will still have that low spot afterward. Is trenchless more expensive than digging?

Per foot, often slightly. Overall, frequently less, once restoration is counted — replacing a driveway, a patio or a mature tree costs considerably more than the difference in method. On a bare lot with easy access, open trench can genuinely be the cheaper choice and we will say so.

How long does trenchless work take?

Lining is usually one day. Bursting is typically two to three including inspection, pit excavation, the pull and restoration. Both beat open trench on the same run.

Will my driveway survive?

Under trenchless methods, yes — both lining and bursting pass beneath hardscape without breaking it. If the defect sits directly under the driveway we will show you the footage and be straight about the options.
